Combining expertise from linguistics and tourism: a tale of two cities
2020
This case study presents the results of an interdisciplinary Virtual Exchange (VE) that was arranged between Finnish and Polish students in 2019. During their six-week collaboration, the students of language studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, worked in teams together with their Polish peers specialising in information and communications technology and management in tourism at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland. The international teams combined their linguistic and tourism-promotion expertise, and, using collaborative digital tools, grappled with the tasks of analysing the official municipal city websites and promoting the lesser-known aspects of their sister cities (…

Self-perception about emerging digital skills in higher education students
2020
Challenges in implementing ICT in career services : perspectives from career development experts
2018
This article reports the findings from a phenomenographic investigation into career development experts’ conceptions of challenges involved in the implementation of information and communication technologies (ICT) in career services. The results show that these challenges varied from (1) inadequate access to ICT, (2) inadequate access to information, and (3) inadequate skills and competencies, to (4) inadequate integration. These findings provide a deeper understanding of critical aspects that may have an important role in the further development and successful implementation of existing and emerging technologies within the guidance service sector. peerReviewed
Adult Pre-Service Teachers Applying 21st Century Skills in the Practice
2014
In this research we present how a group of Finnish adult pre - service teachers (n=21) incorporated 21 st CS through their methods of working instructional methods in the final practicum in autumn 2013. The research material consists of pre - service teacher’s practicum plans, taped lessons and written practicum synthesis. The nature of teaching has changed significantly during the past decades, as a result of which teaching has never been more difficult or more important. This is a challenge also for teacher education programs. The adult teacher education program at Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius focuses on developing 21 st century skills (21 st CS) to enhance the use of technolog…
Technology as 'Applied Science': a Serious Misconception that Reinforces Distorted and Impoverished Views of Science
2005
The current consideration of technology as "applied science", this is to say, as something that comes "after" science, justifies the lack of attention paid to technology in science education. In our paper we question this simplistic view of the science-tecnology relationship, historically rooted in the unequal appreciation of intellectual and manual work, and we try to show how the absense of the technological dimension in science education contributes to a naive and distorted view of science which deeply affects the necessary scientific and technological literacy of all citizens. Inter-generational learning of teachers: what and how do teachers learn from older and younger colleagues?

Attitudes regarding teaching and different ways of being a teacher were learned from both younger and older colleagues alike. Similarities …

Finnish adult students’ perspectives on short-cycle study programmes : motives and evaluations
2018
We investigated how students in Finland perceive short-cycle higher education programmes. In line with the European trend, Finland has piloted short-cycle study programmes in order to attract adult students into higher education. We found that the students were mainly satisfied with their studies, and that their orientations to studies and learning were extrinsic in nature. The strengths of the programme were perceived as related to the flexibility of the studies, the variety of teaching methods, and the extensive contents of the studies. The main challenges were associated with difficulties in using information and communications technology (ICT) within the studies, and issues with time ma…
